GALLOO ISLAND (New York State) - located on the eastern side of Lake Ontario, approx. 6 miles from the Canadian border on the American side near the towns of Kingston and Watertown. Galloo is an extraordinary pretty private island in Lake Ontario that extends over 4.5 miles (7 km) long and up to 1.5 miles (2.5 km) wide. The island features 10 miles (16 km) of diversified shoreline, 3 miles (5 km) of which are spectacular cliffs, some of which have up to 20 metres elevation. The island boats lay waiting in the picturesque natural harbour. Sandy beaches on the north coast and a wide cove on the northwest coast of the island are ideal for bathing activities.
Lake Ontario is renowned for its crystal clear and clean waters. Watch the large freight ships sail by the Gulf of St. Lawrence in the distance.

The waters surrounding the island provide superb fishing: salmon, lake and brown trout, small mouth bass and walleyed pike. For water sports activities, the following are available: 2 motorboats, jet ski, kayak. The quiet coves make the island a perfect destination for families with young children. For hunting enthusiasts, Galloo Island is a very special "El Dorado". Prime whitetail deer (herds of up to approx. 450 animals) live on the island as well as pheasants, ducks and wild geese. The island manager is happy to assist and provide further information. Sackets Harbour is a pretty harbour town with a yacht club, shops and good restaurants.
Location
Galloo Island, New York State, Jefferson County, is located on the eastern side of Lake Ontario, near the towns of Kingston, Canada and Watertown, USA, and is approx. 6 miles from the Canadian border and 12 miles from the USA mainland. Sackets Harbor, a beautiful small town on the US mainland, offers a Yacht Club, good shopping facilities and great dining.
Accessibility
From the Atlantic the island can be reached by ocean going yachts via the St. Lawrence River. Medium sized boats can dock in the island's two natural harbors. From Sackets Harbor to the island itself there is a distance of 12 miles (19km). The airport of Watertown is only 18 miles (23 km) away from Galloo's own airstrip, 4000 feet for private planes. There is a jeep road network throughout the island, which could easily be extended using the gravel found on the island.
Attractions & Activities
All types of water related sports (2 motorboats, jet ski, kayak), hunting, fishing, several existing tracks and gravel roads are inviting for horseback riding, jogging and tracking. The island jeep and 4x4 quads are also available. There is a 40 foot steel work barge, that transports vehicles, fuels and other supplies to run the island, included in the sale.
Fauna
Presently, there are approximately 500 deer on the island. It is a bird paradise for Canadian geese, ducks, waterfowl and wild turkeys.
Flora
Approximately 45% of the island is wooded and 60% pasture land, with about 300 acres of rich meadow and grazing land in the northeastern part. Besides several types of wild flowers such as wild roses, you can find a wide variety of beautiful old trees, different types of maple, oak, spruce, cedar, and various fruit trees, such as apple and plum. Beautiful water lilies and a variety of water plants abound in the fresh water pond.
Farm
The available grazing land is capable of supporting up to 250 head of Angus or over 1,000 sheep. Although there is presently no farming, some acres have been used.

Amenities
The island features a large, new renovated lodge (built in 1889) with 7 bedrooms.
(2 x king-size2 x queen-size3 x 2 twin beds). Each room has its own animal theme. A spacious living area with fireplace exudes cosiness.
The view from the terrace down to the nearby harbor is magnificent. The kitchen has all mod cons, including a washing machine, dryer, etc. An automatic generator provides electricity. Hot air heating, a septic tank and telephone are available. Propane gas furnishes energy for the refrigerator and stove.
You also find a beautifully furnished and equipped guest house. Further, there is a log home, also fully equipped, which was used by the caretaker.
A smaller guesthouse some hundred metres away could also be utilised on request.
There are a total of 9 other buildings on the property including barns, tool sheds, dog kennels and garages.
Base on the mainland
Included in the sale is a mainland lot and a boathouse.
Dining
Self-catering or full boardchoose as you desire. On receipt of your shopping list the island manager will stock the refrigerator before your arrival. Naturally you can also bring along your own provisions. A chef and service personnel can be hired on request. Request a meal including game from the island and fresh fish!

Best time to travel
Recommended is between May and the end of October. Late autumn is also good for hunting enthusiasts.
Getting there
The island is very easily accessed. By boat 12 miles (19 km) from Sackets Harbour - depending on size of boat $100 - 150. USD
By plane directly to the islands own airstrip (4,000 ft.), hangar available $250. USD per flight hour. The airport of Watertown is only 18 miles (23 km) away.
Also, the island can be reached by yacht from the Atlantic!
